What’s a straight jack?

Ladder jacks are triangular devices with brackets that attach to the rungs of two ladders to create a temporary scaffold for painting or other tasks. They can be made of metal or aluminum and have weight limits. Protective harnesses may be required for certain heights.

Ladder jacks are devices that are often used as a means of establishing some type of scaffolding between two ladders. The idea is to create a temporary structure that can support workers and equipment as they complete some type of task, like painting or whitewashing a building’s exterior. In design, a basic ladder jack is shaped like a triangle fitted with brackets, allowing the jack to be attached to the rungs of the ladders involved.

When inserted correctly, a ladder jack fits over the rungs of a ladder and extends horizontally. Once in place, it’s normally a good idea to test the placement of the jack, making sure it’s a snug fit and the device doesn’t slip out of place. Once a second jack is attached to the second ladder, some type of scaffolding or planking can be placed on top of the jack set, creating what is usually called a ladder jack scaffold.

With this application, painters can quickly place two ladders in place and create scaffolding that can support their weight as they work. The advantage of this approach over simply climbing a ladder is that there’s more room for supplies like paint and brushes to stay close at hand. Furthermore, the painter is able to move more freely, covering a larger area than would otherwise be possible. When using a single ladder for the same task, the painter would periodically have to stop work, get off the ladder, move it, and then go up a second time to end up with that same amount of area.

In the past, a ladder jack was normally constructed using some type of heavy metal. Today, you can purchase ladder jacks made from aluminum rather than models made from steel or iron. There are some models that are constructed with heavy-duty plastic, although these tend to be more limited in use than the metal versions.

While a ladder jack is capable of supporting a fair amount of weight, they are somewhat limited in strength. Various sizes and brands of device normally specify a maximum amount of weight that can be placed on the scaffold and still be considered safe. Additionally, local regulations may require that anyone working with ladder jack scaffolding also use some type of protective harness if the platform created with the use of the jacks is more than a certain distance above the ground.
