The B-52 Stratofortress, manufactured by Boeing for the US Army, is the longest continuously in service aircraft in American military history. Designed for long-range nuclear capabilities, the planes have been modified for modern warfare and are projected to be phased out around 2040.
A Stratofortress is an aircraft manufactured by Boeing for use by the United States Army. More formally known as the B-52 or B-52 Stratofortress, these aircraft were in production from 1952 to 1962, and fifty years later, they were still in use by the United States Air Force. This makes the Stratofortress the longest continuously in service aircraft in American military history, and the Air Force projects the planes to be phased out around 2040, which would likely set an all-time service record.
These aircraft were designed to meet a number of emerging needs in the 1950s. The United States was transitioning away from traditional warfare and dealing with the rise of the Cold War, and wanted long-range bombers with nuclear capabilities. Boeing responded with one of the largest and heaviest aircraft in military service; service members sometimes refer to the planes as “Big Ugly Fat Fellows” (BUFFs) in reference to their rather gangly appearance and large size. The planes were specifically designed for long flights, even when loaded with weapons.
Boeing produced several different models of the Stratofortress to meet various needs. The B-52H, the last model to roll, proved to be the model that would endure into the 21st century. A series of fully functional aircraft were destroyed in Arizona in 1991 as part of a non-proliferation agreement, but the terms of the agreement allowed the Air Force to retain a core group of aircraft for various uses. In exchange for destroying some of its weapons and aircraft under this agreement, the United States was allowed to oversee the destruction of some Russian weapons and aircraft.
The Air Force has added significant modifications to aircraft to make them useful in modern warfare, from advanced electronic systems to housings that allow planes to carry drones. Five crew members fly the Stratofortress on routine flights, with room for a rotating instructor who can train individuals in the proper operation of the aircraft, and the Stratofortress can be found stationed at various military bases.
The Stratofortress is sometimes seen as an icon of American military might. The planes were designed to be intimidating and imposing as well as flexible and extremely useful, and they definitely achieved this goal. Although planes have a variety of uses for peace and war, many people associate planes specifically with the Cold War and nuclear war, thanks to iconic roles in movies like Dr. Strangelove.
