A studio flat in the UK is a rented room in a multiple occupancy home, often used for low-cost or temporary housing. They may have a kitchenette and shared bathroom facilities. HMOs must be licensed and are popular near universities.

In Britain, a studio flat, or studio flat, is a furnished rented room in a multiple occupancy home (HMO). A British apartment block, or apartment complex, differs from an HMO in that most HMOs are originally built to be occupied by a single family. In the United States, a single room occupancy landlord (SRO) is similar to an HMO with studio apartments. The people who are likely to rent a studio apartment are those who need low-cost or temporary housing solutions. Renters of studio apartments are called bedsitters.

Homes converted to HMOs may have five to fifteen or more studio apartments, depending on the size of the home. A studio apartment can be any size, although many are quite small. Studios generally contain a single or double bed plus a small table and set of chairs. Some studios are furnished with a sofa bed or a folding bed which can be used as a seat during the day and as a bed at night. Most studio apartments have a kitchenette, or a small kitchen area with an electric hotplate that has a single burner, or burner, for you to use for cooking.

The newer studios can be self contained and have a private bathroom with shower, toilet and a small kitchen with basic appliances. An HMO may feature common social areas for bedsitters. Bedsitters may share a community kitchen in the HMO and most must share a bathroom, especially in older HMOs. Sharing a bathroom with many other people is one of the drawbacks of living in a studio flat, but there are ways to deal with it. For example, a bedsitter may clean toilets before using them and may store their personal care products in the studio room rather than the bathroom.

An HMO in the UK must be licensed or fines can be imposed on the homeowner. Homes located near universities are often converted to HMO studios because they tend to attract students who prefer to live off campus. Living in a studio flat is also an alternative to a shared house or flat. Shared houses and shared apartments involve finding a roommate to share a house or apartment with and splitting the rental costs. Studios may require the renter to sign a contract for at least six months, while apartments and shared houses often don’t involve contracts.
