Stuntmen perform dangerous stunts for movies and TV shows, often standing in for the stars. They are trained in skydiving, rock climbing, and the use of explosives, and perform dangerous stunts like high falls and car crashes. Stunt doubles are unsung heroes who add realism to fight scenes and car chases. Some stars have done their own stunts.
A stuntman performs dangerous takedowns, car accidents and fights that require specialized training to complete without serious injury. Often standing in for the star of a movie or television show, the stunt double is rarely filmed up close and rarely stars in the picture. Some scripts call for the stuntman to be set on fire, while others have the daredevil strapped to an airplane wing and taken into the sky. Typically trained in the art of skydiving, rock climbing and the use of explosives, it’s not uncommon to see this daredevil get mauled by animals, beaten by cowboys or dragged behind a horse through the streets of an old western town with his boot “stuck” in a stirrup.
Often, the stunt double is the unsung hero of a movie. Throwing punches and gun shots that the star of the movie must take is the normal job of the stuntman. Men aren’t the only performers who take tremendous risk in pictures, as women also perform dangerous stunts that are written into the role of the female lead. One of the most used stunts in movies is the high fall. This move causes the stuntman to fall off the top of a building or off a bridge. Some of the first stunts were western film related and had stunts falling from the roofs of city buildings during large shootout scenes.
Major fight scenes usually involve a lot of stunts to complete the scene. Breaking tables and being thrown through windows, the stunt double adds a special kind of realism to the scene that simple sound effects alone cannot provide. Many stuntmen are professional drivers, which allows the stuntman to realistically drive the vehicles at high speeds while creating high-speed chases and crashes. One of the most dangerous car stunts to do is the double car crash. Stuntmen must time their speed very critically to avoid one car flying higher than the other and hitting the vehicle on the windshield instead of the bumper.
While big stars get much of the credit that stuntmen deserve, movies are often made better by the dubbing people, who add realistic danger to the mix. Occasionally, a stunt person breaks through and breaks into the mainstream and actually stars in a movie. There are also some stars who do or have done their own stunts, such as some of the most famous martial arts heroes, comedians and cowboy actors.
