What’s a sunroof?

Sunroofs allow light and air into a vehicle and have evolved from manually operated opaque glass panels to electrically operated and even solar-powered. Different types include pop-up, spoiler, built-in, folding, top-mount, panoramic, and removable roof panels.

A sunroof is a type of opening inside a vehicle that allows both light and air to enter the passenger space. Most of today’s sunroofs are electrically operated, although some of these openings can be manually operated. Sunroofs have come a long way since their original beginnings, and today’s sunroofs hardly resemble those of a few years ago.

Originally, a sunroof was made up of a manually operated opaque glass panel. This single layer of glass could be minimally opened or closed to reveal fresh air or sunlight. In 1973, a Ford marketing manager created the sunroof. This type of roof featured a translucent glass panel that not only opened, but allowed passengers to see the outside world through the glass even when the sunroof was closed.

Today, moonroofs and sunroofs still exist, although the two terms have become interchangeable. Also, sunroofs and moonroofs have morphed into many different types and styles that are available all over the world. Styles include pop-up, spoiler, built-in, folding, top-mount, panoramic, and removable roof panels. The main difference between each type is based on the actual movement of the roof.

While some roofs tilt and slide, other roofs are completely removable. The amount of surface area covered by glass is also a way to differentiate between the many types of sunroofs available. Most of the newer models are electronic, although some of them are manually operated. In general, manually operated sunroofs tend to be less expensive than electronic editions.

Sunroofs can be installed at the factory, or added to certain vehicles after a car has left the factory. Almost all car companies now offer various versions of the sunroof or sunroof. Also, newer sunroofs are frequently invented as most consumers want larger glass panels that allow more light and air to pass through.

Recent inventions of the sunroof are geared towards capturing energy from the sun to create an efficient and eco-friendly car. Sunroofs are a great example of this newer technology, and these roofs bring a whole different meaning to the original concept of the sunroof. Solar roofs are made of glass with an actual solar panel. The purpose of the solar panel is to create electricity which, in turn, will activate the indoor fans. The idea behind this invention is to cool the interior of a hot car when the car is not in use.
