Thread nuts cut threads on the outside of pipes or rods. They are made of hardened tool steel with raised cutting edges and are used with cutting compound. Hand or power tools can be used, and the cutting process should be done in small increments with frequent stops. Eye and hand protection should be worn.
A thread nut is a tool designed to cut threads on the outside surfaces of pipe or rod. These dies are typically hollow centered circular bits made of hardened tool steel with a series of raised cutting edges arranged around their inner surfaces. The cutting ridges are usually dotted with several cutouts that facilitate the removal of chips and chips, i.e. chips. Thread dies can be held securely for hand threading operations in a specially made handle or in the chuck of a power thread cutter. Thread dies are always used with a special cutting compound that lubricates the die and helps remove chips.
Threads cut on the outside surfaces of solid rods and pipes are typically made by hand or with a special power tool using a hardened tool steel thread die. A typical threading die is circular with a hollow center with a cutting edge. The cutting edges are usually interrupted at regular intervals by notches which reduce the support surface of the cutting edges, thus lightening the stress placed on the matrix and favoring the removal of the chip. The cutting edges of a die are also tapered outward towards the first cut to ease the effort required. Dies are usually available in sets with a selection of die sizes and often include dies used to cut internal threads.
A hand cut thread is started by slowly rotating the thread die onto the pipe while maintaining forward pressure on the handle and die. Once the initial part of the thread has been cut, the die will feed along the existing threads so that only rotational force is needed to continue cutting. The cutting action should be done in small increments with frequent stops to give the die a half turn back to break up and remove nicks. This process is then continued until the required length of wire has been cut.
The thread dies used in power thread trimmers are similar in design although they are often of a two-part clamshell design. The cut exhaust systems of these dies are also a bit more generous due to the torque involved in the power cut. All dies should always be used with an approved cutting paste or compound which lubricates the die during cutting and helps remove cuts. Because of the ever-present possibility of tool tip breakage and the extreme sharpness of freshly cut threads, eye and hand protection should always be worn when using a die.
