Tie rods connect and control movement between components in machines and vehicles, including steering control in cars, boats, and aircraft. They are made of high-strength steel and have adjustable threaded sections. Regular maintenance is important for safety.

Tie rods transfer and control movement between components in machines and motor vehicles. Each front wheel on most cars has its own tie rod to connect to the power steering unit. Six or more tie rods can also control the movement of each of the four wheels in sophisticated automotive suspension systems to deliver high-performance handling along with a smooth ride. Tie rods generally have swivel or ball-and-socket ends that allow the connecting parts to rotate, swing, or rotate in whatever positional orientation is necessary to fulfill their function.

These bars are also used as connecting rods to resolve linear motion into rotary motion with crankshafts and crank wheels in machines and appliances. They allow a motor or transmission output to activate various levers, arms or functional shafts connected to it. A tie rod typically has a threaded length adjustment section that allows the rod to be tailored to the exact needs of a mechanical application. Because they can transmit large forces, they are usually made of high-strength, hardened steel and plated to protect against corrosion.

Tie rods are widely used for steering control in many modes of transportation, in addition to cars and trucks. In boats and ships, they drive outboard motors, stern drives, and rudders. Aircraft of all types use tie rods to connect mechanical and hydraulic actuators to flight control surfaces on wings and stabilizers. They also help raise and lower the landing gear, open and close doors and hatches, and control the movement of the seats and seat backs.

Lawn mowers, snow throwers, and many other powered implements, including farm tractors and combines, use the tie rod mechanism extensively to control the movement of their working parts. This may include height adjustments and horizontal and vertical orientation. In the living room, the tie rod allows the recliner to be tilted into the correct position for a nap. It would be virtually impossible to create those thrilling rides without straps that securely connect the main components.

Tie rods play a key role in a car’s performance and safety, and should be carefully inspected during regular maintenance. While designed to perform reliably for many years, driving too hard over obstacles like curbs and potholes can bend a tie-rod or loosen its ends. While some auto manufacturers use maintenance-free tie rods, some recommend lubrication every time the oil is changed.
