A system administrator needs a bachelor’s degree in computer science and at least two years of experience. They must have a broad understanding of computer operations, be creative problem-solvers, and tailor computers to meet specific needs. They may also need to train employees and have patience.

System administrators keep a computer system running at peak performance and efficiency. A person who wants to work in this position will likely need a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. He will also need at least two years of experience with computer systems before being promoted to a systems administrator position. He has typically worked as a systems engineer, learning the basics of how systems work in practice and theory.

A system administrator needs a fairly broad understanding of various computer operations to be effective. Must understand how mainframe server works and know how to maintain computer system, install software and patches, troubleshoot, maintain data files, monitor system, and backup and restore systems. In short, the administrator should know how to do almost everything the system requires for maintenance.

The job description for a sysadmin says little creativity is required, but that’s not necessarily the case. Often the job requires a great deal of creative thinking to solve a problem quickly. If there is a system problem, there may be more than one “fix” and it is the system administrator’s job to determine which solution will be the most effective. He may also be in charge of updating the system and deciding which software is most effective for the job he does. This will be very different from system to system, depending on each one’s needs and functions. An accounting department has completely different needs than sales, for example, and it’s up to the system administrator to tailor computers to the needs they need to meet.

A systems administrator will also need to be something of a diplomat, particularly in a smaller company. In smaller companies, he will usually work one-on-one with those who use computers and may be in the position of tutor or trainer, as well as a repairman. In this case, he may be dealing with employees who have little experience and understanding of computers and will have to teach them how to use their equipment without offending them.
Chances are he’ll be the one to yell at employees when their machines are faulty, so patience is another important virtue for a system administrator.
