What’s a tag system?

Tagging systems are used to mark items using technology. There are three primary uses: linking metadata to multimedia content, linking barcoded images to information, and signaling web browsers how to make content on web pages. Each system works differently. Metadata tags help organize collections. Microsoft Custom Tags use barcode images to link objects to information. HTML tag systems indicate objects, actions, and hierarchy on web pages.

The name tagging system refers to any of several methods of marking items using technology. The three primary uses of a tag system in 21st century technology are to link metadata to multimedia content, to link barcoded images to the information and entertainment someone has chosen to link to them, and to signal web browsers how to make content on web pages. Each of these three systems is completely separate and works completely differently.

The metadata tag system for media files, such as audio and video files, contains information about the file content, as well as data such as artist, album, title, track number, scene, etc., related to the type of media being tagged . There are several standards for the format of tags, including ID3v1 and ID3v2, as well as APEv2, Vorbis comments, MPR (the iTunes® metadata tag), and Windows Media, but in each case the metadata in the tags is separate from the audio or video actual contents of the file. Metadata tags help users identify and organize their collections. There are also metadata tag editors, which allow you to edit tags individually or in batches, and also help in organizing your files.

The second type of tag system is the Microsoft® Custom Tags which uses barcode images that can be turned into personal icons to link the object on which the image appears to any information attached to it by the owner of the image . Individuals can create their own image and “reading” the tags is done using a mobile phone which can interpret them by taking a photo or a scan. One example is an advertising poster a restaurant posted at a bus stop with a custom Microsoft® tag linking to their website’s reservation page. A passerby who scans the tag is directed to the website using their smartphone browser and can immediately make a reservation for a meal.

The third type of tag system is the method of displaying elements in HTML. This tag system can indicate both types of objects, as well as actions and hierarchy. For example, the header structure of a website can be created through the HTML tag system.
