Teflon® tubing, made of poly(tetrafluoroethylene), is strong, flexible, and resistant to high pressure, heat, chemicals, and biofilm formation. It is used in various applications, including brake lines, biological research, and gas lines. Custom lengths and types are available from manufacturers.

A Teflon® tube is a tube that integrates poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE), a synthetic polymer often known by the brand name Teflon®, registered by the DuPont company. There are numerous applications for PTFE tubing, ranging from brake lines in a car to tubing in a biological research facility. Several companies manufacture Teflon® tubing and related PTFE products, and this material is available from some hardware and auto supply stores, as well as specialty companies.

Teflon® has several characteristics that make it ideal as a pipe material. It is extremely strong, but also very flexible and can withstand high pressure, high heat and many chemicals. Teflon® also resists biofilm formation and is easy to clean. Resistance to wetting is another advantage of PTFE: Teflon® tubing should not leak or be compromised by the liquids it carries. All of these benefits can come with a hefty price tag, but the safety and reliability of PTFE tubing is usually worth the price.

Classically, Teflon® tubing is made by braiding strands of PTFE. The pipe can be reinforced with various metals for extra strength, especially in environments where the pipe is likely to be subjected to high stresses. Braided Teflon® hose is solid and often quite heavy, but it is also very flexible. The hose is finished with tightly crimped fittings. Special fittings can be equipped upon request, or people can use converters that can connect two different types of fittings.

In cars, Teflon® hoses can be used for things like the brake system, maintaining a high level of pressure and reducing the risk of brake fluid leaking. Performance cars often include Teflon® components. Laboratories use PTFE tubing to transfer chemicals, gas supplies, and other materials safely and efficiently, and this tubing is also used in some firefighting applications. At home, Teflon® tubing can be used with gas lines for water heaters, stoves, and stoves.

PTFE tubing companies can usually make custom lengths and types for customers upon request, including tubing with unique fittings or unusual diameters. The pipe may also be sheathed in various materials for the purpose of color coding or to provide additional insulation. It is also possible to obtain pre-cut Teflon® tubing for many projects. Mass-produced pipe tends to be less expensive, because it doesn’t require extra effort on the part of the manufacturer.
