A tensioner pulley is used to adjust the belt in a belt and pulley system. There are manual and automatic types, with manual ones being levered into place or adjusted with a bolt, while automatic ones are spring loaded. Pulleys drive the system, power a device, or spin freely. Accessory pulleys can be adjusted by sliding or tilting the device or using an adjustment screw. Auto tensioner pulleys maintain correct tension and need to be replaced regularly.
A tensioner pulley is a device that can be used to tension the belt in any belt and pulley system. These systems typically consist of a number of wheels known as pulleys and a belt wound around them. In order for the belt to fit the pulleys, some parts of the system typically need to be adjustable. One way to allow for this type of adjustment is a tensioner pulley, which can be manual or automatic. Manual tensioners are usually levered into place or adjusted by turning a bolt, and automatic tensioners typically are spring loaded.
In belt and pulley systems, pulleys are essentially wheels that drive the system, power a device, or simply spin freely, meaning they spin but don’t use or supply any energy. Some of these systems consist of the power and accessory pulleys only, in which case one of the accessory pulleys is usually adjustable. This adjustment is often done by sliding or tilting the entire device until the belt is taught, after which it can be fixed in place. In some cases, the accessory device could also be slid or tilted into place by turning an adjustment screw. The other way to tighten a belt is to use a tensioner pulley.
The two main types of tensioner pulleys are manual or automatic. Sometimes a manual tensioner pulley needs to be levered into place until the belt is taut, at which point the pulley can be bolted on. Other varieties include an adjusting screw, which is a device that can allow the tensioner pulley to move in or out depending on which way it is turned. After the belt has been installed, this screw can be turned until the correct belt deflection is achieved. These pulleys usually also have a bolt that needs to be tightened, otherwise the adjusting screw could loosen due to vibration.
Auto tensioner pulleys are usually spring loaded so they are able to maintain the correct tension on a belt at any given time. This type of tensioner pulley is usually pulled back to release tension if the belt needs to be replaced. The pulley can be released after the new belt has been installed, at which point it will snap back into place and automatically provide the correct amount of tension. This type of pulley typically needs to be replaced fairly regularly, as the spring tension can weaken over time. If an automatic tensioner pulley becomes weak, the belt can come loose and the system could stop working properly.
