A test register is a CPU storage area used for self-tests and other test functions. It is not easily accessible and unauthorized access can cause errors or damage. Computer technicians can diagnose and fix problems.

A test register is a small section of a central processing unit (CPU) reserved for tasks that the processor can initiate when it wants to test itself or run a test on something else. It is a type of processor register and not all processors contain such an area. As a general rule, programs don’t need access to this area and so the access level excludes them to prevent exception errors and other problems that can arise if they try to use it. Computer users usually don’t need to interact with the test registry.

The control register, for example, regulates the central processing unit. Unauthorized access could create errors with the CPU and could potentially lock up or damage the system. Because of this, the logs are carefully installed and hidden, and the CPU monitors them very closely.

If a CPU has a test register, it can use the block of memory to run self-tests and perform other test functions. Test registers can be used for a variety of tests directly involving the CPU. Programs that need to run self-tests use memory in other areas of the computer so they don’t interfere with the test log. Fast access is crucial here, as the CPU may need to run a test and get a response quickly so as not to interfere with the functioning of the operating system.

Errors in the test log can cause inaccurate results or CPU problems. These can escalate over time if not identified and eventually the user will have to install a new CPU. Computer technicians have tools at their disposal to access the CPU and trace the sources of computer problems, and can determine if components need to be repaired or replaced in order for the computer to function properly. They can also diagnose software and operating system errors and can debug a computer to fix user-reported problems.
