A thermostatic switch is a control that operates by measuring the temperature emitted by the device it controls, automatically switching it off when the desired temperature is reached. It is commonly used in electric ovens, home thermostats, and to protect electrical devices. The switch must be programmed with two separate temperatures to function properly.

A thermostatic switch is a power switch powered by the device it controls, through the thermal conductivity or thermal convection of the device itself. Thermostatic switches, in essence, are controls that operate exclusively on the information provided to them by measuring the temperature emitted by the device they control. When a switch setting is created, the switch activates the device or deactivates the device when the set temperature is reached. This creates a low maintenance thermal device, as it does not require the user to flip the power switch; it simply switches off when the desired temperature is reached.

One of the instances where a thermostatic switch is typically used is inside an electric oven. The user sets the oven temperature on the dial or digital oven faceplate and the oven engages. When the desired temperature is reached and the thermostatic switch detects it, it automatically switches off the oven burner so as not to exceed the desired temperature.
Once the burner has been switched off, the temperature is allowed to vary slightly before the switch switches the burner back on to maintain the desired temperature.

There are also many cases where the user operates the thermostatic switch directly. An example is the home thermostat. There, the switch automatically turns the heating unit on and off once the user sets the desired temperature.
Thermostatic switches can also be used as a means of protecting electrical devices. For example, the circuit board, or motherboard, of a computer contains many elements that generate an amount of heat that could easily damage the circuit board, rendering the computer unusable. Therefore, a thermostatic switch is employed within the system to regulate the flow of air into and out of the computer case by engaging a cooling fan whenever a certain temperature is reached inside the case. The thermostat in a vehicle’s engine is also responsible for engaging the fan, which cools it by drawing fresh air through the radiator system whenever the engine temperature reaches a specific level designated by the engine specifications.

For an automatic thermostatic switch to function properly, it must be programmed to have a designated on/off temperature range. This means that two separate temperatures are needed to tell the switch where to turn the device on and where to turn it off. Once the temperatures are programmed, the switch can operate without user input.
