What’s a Traction Unit?

A hauling unit is used to remove damaged casing and drilling equipment from a well. Smaller units are used in agricultural pumping applications. The construction of the unit varies, but its purpose is to remove systems without digging. The units are portable and mounted on heavy-duty trucks.

A hauling unit is one of the oilfield mechanical applications used to remove casing and other pipe apparatus within a well. It is also used to remove drill pipe inside a well. A hauling unit is called when a wellbore shows signs of internal damage, such as an obvious leak or a sudden drop in drilling fluid pressure at the surface. When a well exhibits production problems that cannot be repaired by simpler means, the unit is tasked with physically lifting the casing and any drilling equipment that appears to be damaged from the well to be examined and repaired in a timely manner.

Outside of the oilfield, traction units are also used in pumping applications on land tracts that have well pumping operations, such as on farms that have automated irrigation systems. In this application, the units used to recover damaged pumps in agricultural fields are much smaller than the units used in major petroleum applications. The smaller units can often be operated by one or three people, as opposed to the entire output required to operate the field drive unit.

The construction of a towing apparatus is different between different brands and manufacturers. The method of construction may also vary depending on the intended use of the unit. Some units are upright in shape and telescopic upward after being connected to tools in the well; others are molded into the shape of a wheel, with the pump system attached to the wheel axle and cranked around the wheel axle in a winch formation. Regardless of shape or form of function, the purpose of the towing unit is to remove an underground well or pumping system without the need to dig or destroy the surface under which the system is located.

Most drive units are portable, so they can be easily moved from pump system to pump system or from well to well in oil fields. The unit itself is typically mounted to the back of a heavy-duty truck or vehicle, making it easy to move around. Most operators are independent contractors who travel to the oil field or tract of land they were hired from to remove a system.
