A traffic signaller directs vehicles using flags, signals, and hand signals on road construction sites. They communicate with drivers, co-workers, and police officers to ensure safety. No educational requirements, but training and certification are often required. Good communication skills and awareness of changing conditions are preferred.

A traffic signaller is a person who uses flags, signals and hand signals to direct vehicles. He usually works on road construction sites where traditional electric road signs and stationary directional signs are unavailable or inoperative. A traffic signal may work for a road construction contractor or be an employee of a local or regional government agency.

When a road or street is being repaired, large cones, usually of a highly visible color to motorists in any type of weather, are often arranged in a strategic pattern by a traffic light. He often places them on either side of the repair area to create an alternate path for vehicles. He typically talks with his supervisor early on in the project to determine the most practical path for the design.

To further assist drivers in navigating the area, a traffic light is typically provided with portable signs and flags. Signs typically have guidelines printed on them, instructing drivers to stop, slow down, or use extreme caution when proceeding. If flags are used, they are usually colored red to indicate stop, green to proceed and yellow to indicate caution and reduced speeds. Some scenarios require the signalman to provide the last driver in a procession with a flag or marker to give to the signalman at the opposite end of the road design to indicate a reversal in the traffic pattern.

In addition to communicating with drivers, a traffic signalman also regularly communicates with his co-workers or police officers. He may discuss alternative instructions with his associates or be asked to warn them of imminent danger. If a driver fails to follow instructions or engages in reckless driving, typically the flag must provide the driver’s license number to a police officer.

To be successful in this position, a traffic signal must be sure that his instructions ensure the safety of drivers. Generally, their behavior is expected to reflect confidence in their actions and instructions. He is often asked to answer questions from drivers and provide oral directives, so good communication skills and good manners are strongly preferred. Being aware of changing conditions and having quick reflexes are considered advantages for job seekers.

Typically, there are no educational requirements for this job. A considerable number of organizations require traffic signallers to undergo training and be certified for the position. On-the-job training is also often offered to new traffic signallers. A history of working with the public is considered an asset for anyone aspiring to be a traffic signaller.
