What’s a trailer dolly?

A tow dolly is an apparatus that connects to a truck to haul trailers, commonly used for shipping and transportation. Trailer dollies provide wheels for trailers and are used to transport small machines. Trailer-mounted drilling rigs are popular in oil-rich parts of the world for quick replacement of malfunctioning rigs.

An apparatus that connects to a truck to haul trailers is a tow dolly. They are most commonly attached to semi-trailer trucks. In most cases, trailer beds are essentially flatbeds on which shipping boxes sit and large shipping boxes on top for transport. Some platforms are more specialized for certain teams. The term “trailer bed” can also be used as a general description for trucks that haul cargo or tow trailers, along the lines of “big bed,” although this usage is more common in the United States.

Trailers are common and efficient ways to transport and move equipment. Smaller trailers often come with attached wheels and can easily be pulled behind cars and vans with a simple trailer hitch. However, larger trailers are often less mobile. Many don’t have wheels at all, which can make moving them from one place to another more difficult. A trailer dolly essentially provides wheels for a trailer, as well as a truck connection.

The simplest trailer dolly is little more than an elongated flatbed on wheels. Platforms come in various sizes. The smallest dollies contain only two wheels and are designed to be attached to a car or small truck. Trailer dollies of this variety are commonly used to transport landscaping equipment, power tools, or other small machines.

Most tow rigs are significantly larger, and most are used commercially for shipping and receiving. Some items can be shipped efficiently by air, but larger products, particularly automobiles and major machinery, are most efficiently shipped by sea. Cargo containers and big boxes are the standard of shipping, but these containers can be difficult to maneuver once they reach ports.

Flatbed trucks are often the solution. Trucking is a popular means of shipping and transportation around the world. A truck is generally made up of two main parts: the cab, where the engine is housed and the driver sits, and the trailer, which is attached to the cab with a hitch. Some trucks can pull only one trailer dolly at a time, but others can pull several at a time. Much of this depends on the weight and length of the trailer contents, as well as the total horsepower of the cab.

Other towing equipment is more specialized. A trailer-mounted drilling rig, for example, is a portable oil drilling rig that is mounted on a trailer that can be hitched to a truck and easily transported. These types of trailer-mounted drilling rigs are one-piece trailers, meaning the drilling rig is a permanent part of the trailer. Unlike a traditional trailer rig, which can be used for a variety of different shipping or hauling assignments, a trailer-mounted drilling rig can only be used for drilling.

This type of tow rig is extremely popular in oil-rich parts of the world, particularly when more permanent rigs break down or malfunction. The ability to quickly drive in a replacement saves a lot of time and money. Similar all-in-one tow dollies are common in the construction and demolition industries.
