The term “rep workout” refers to the number of repetitions performed for a specific exercise. The muscle fibers are typically referred to as fast twitch endurance muscle fibers or slow twitch strength and power muscle fibers. It’s a good rule of thumb to remember that the higher the repetitions of an exercise program, the greater the use of fast-twitch muscle fibers. Similarly, the more weight and resistance that is generated during an exercise program, the more use of slow twitch force and power muscle fibers.

Power lifters focus more on slow twitch fibers and require fewer repetitions of an exercise. This is also an important technique for soccer players, as they require a quick burst of power for a limited amount of time. Extremely heavy weight lower reps are generally used to generate maximum power and size.

Endurance athletes are better prepared to create an exercise program that focuses more on the use of fast twitch fibers. This program will usually involve creating a higher rep workout within the exercise program. Generally, any exercise program that requires repetitions greater than nine repetitions per set is considered an endurance-oriented, fast-twitch exercise.

Another important element to consider with rep training is size versus tone exercises to burn fat. Higher force and popping exercises require larger muscles, while longer resistance exercises require more muscle tone. This is important to keep in mind as people who aspire to grow in muscle size should refrain from high output training programs that focus more on fast twitch fibers.
