A triceps rope is a piece of exercise equipment used for triceps exercises, attached to weight-lifting machines that use cables. It consists of a thick rope with a metal fitting in the center and knobs at each end. Its flexibility allows for a freer range of motion and consistent resistance, making it ideal for triceps exercises.

A triceps rope, or triceps extension rope, is a piece of exercise equipment that an athlete can use for a variety of exercises, usually those that involve the triceps. The triceps rope is an accessory that athletes add to various weight-lifting machines that use cables. Attaching the triceps rope to a cable machine provides the athlete with a grip that is very effective in maximizing the effectiveness of a triceps workout.

Building a tricep rope starts with a thick piece of rope. The rope is usually 24 to 28 inches (60 to 70 cm) long and 1.25 to 1.5 inches (3.1 to 3.8 centimeters) in diameter. Small variations in rope length will result in a slightly different angle and range of motion during the lift. While using a tricep rope, the athlete will be holding it directly, so the diameter will affect this grip. Athletes with smaller hands should try to use strings with smaller diameters.

Aside from the rope itself, a tricep rope consists of very little. In the center of the rope is a metal fitting that allows it to connect to a latch on most standard cable machines. At each end of the rope there is a knob that prevents the hands from slipping off the end of the rope during the lift. This pommel can be a rounded piece of plastic, or sometimes just a large knot in the rope.

The benefit of a triceps rope when performing lifts is that the flexibility of the rope allows for a freer range of motion than most other cable machine attachments. As an athlete performs a lift, the central placement of the metal bracket causes the rope to bend in half. As the athlete pulls the rope toward their body, the arms will tend to separate so that the rope begins to straighten slightly. This change in angle results in more consistent resistance and allows the athlete to work muscles at multiple angles during a single lift.

An athlete can best take advantage of this benefit when performing exercises that require the athlete to pull weight toward their body, which is why the triceps rope is more common when performing triceps exercises. Some of the exercises that use this attachment are the rope triceps press, rope pulldowns, cable overhead extensions, seated rows, and cable extensions. It is also possible to use the triceps rope for other types of exercises, such as pushups, but this is less common.
