What’s a USB AP?

A USB access point connects a computer to a LAN or the internet, allowing other devices to connect wirelessly. It can be used with multiple devices and has built-in Wi-Fi search functionality. It strengthens wireless signals and is useful in areas with limited wireless connections.

A Universal Serial Bus (USB) access point is a USB device attached to a computer and connected to a local area network (LAN) or the Internet. This allows other computers in the local area to wirelessly connect to the LAN or the Internet via the USB access point. Some USB access points have the ability to detect wireless networks in the area and are called wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) detectors.

The USB standard allows for easy connection to computers and other devices. A USB device can be easily plugged into any computer or device that has a USB port and is usually self-configuring. While not a technical term, Wi-Fi has become synonymous with wireless connectivity.

You can use USB access points with multiple devices including game consoles, digital audio players, personal computers and telephones to connect to LAN or the Internet wirelessly. There are several scenarios where a USB access point would be useful to facilitate a connection, even if a home or business only has a wired connection available. The access point would allow many devices to communicate with the LAN or the Internet.

A common use for a USB access point is in games. Many game consoles have multiplayer games and require internet access. If you have a computer with a wired connection to the Internet, simply connect the USB access point to your computer and you have a wireless connection.

Many of the available USB access points also have other built-in features. One of the most common features is the Wi-Fi search functionality. It allows you to find Wi-Fi connections in the area. One bonus is that if you’re in an unfamiliar area, many of these devices can find networks without having to turn on another device, like a laptop.
While many networks and public places, such as bookstores and restaurants, offer wireless connections, USB access points can still offer benefits. Most importantly, they can strengthen the wireless signal, which is especially noticeable if the computer to which the USB access point is connected via a wired connection to a LAN or the Internet. Wired connections to any network are almost always faster and more reliable than wireless ones, and the USB access point is often closer to the connecting device than another wireless access point.
