Vanities were originally used for beautification tasks, but have since become a fixture in bathrooms. They are popular among young girls’ furniture groups and can include a vanity bench. Vanity benches come in various designs and can be used for other purposes, such as sitting to put on socks and shoes. They add a touch of classic, feminine elegance to a bedroom and are useful for applying makeup and styling hair.

Vanities have been popular furniture for over 100 years. Originally designed as a place for women to sit and brush their hair at night and rearrange their hair each morning, as well as perform other beautification tasks, the vanity is aptly named. Typically, a vanity was a side table or dresser with an attached mirror. A vanity bench, or seat, was a separate but accompanying piece of furniture for seating. With the advent of indoor plumbing, vanities have been moved out of bedrooms and dressing rooms and have become a fixture within bathrooms.

Today, vanities as separate pieces of furniture have seen something of a resurgence, especially among young girls’ furniture groups. In modern bathrooms, vanity cabinets serve as cabinet storage and a resting place for vanity tops, which include molded-in sinks. This eliminates the need for a vanity bench, as one person simply stands in front of the vanity to wash and beautify. In larger bathrooms, a fancier vanity can be incorporated and provide space for a vanity bench to pull up to a seating area.

A vanity bench can be a bench with or without a back, or it can simply be a small chair or stool. As standalone furniture, vanities and the accompanying dressing table bench are usually designed to match as a set. However, a vanity bench can be purchased separately to slide under a vanity in a bathroom where space permits. In particularly large homes, the homeowner may be offered a separate dressing area where a vanity bench can serve other purposes, such as sitting to put on socks and shoes.

Available in a wide variety of designs, a vanity bench is typically upholstered and can be accented with brass or other decorative metallic finishes. There are also wooden vanity benches available that may or may not be upholstered, though the upholstered upholstery offers additional comfort.

As accent furniture, a vanity and makeup bench add a touch of classic, feminine elegance to a bedroom. They are popular accent pieces for little girls rooms and create a place where they can sit and play dress up. In older teenage girls’ rooms, they provide somewhere to sit and apply makeup and style hair away from the bathroom, which can be a useful space in a home with more than one teenager.
