A variable speed pulley system uses lubricated chains to adapt to different functions. It is weightless, reduces friction and force required, and has movable flanges to control speed. It is inexpensive and has an almost infinite speed range.

A variable speed pulley allows you to use pulleys at different speeds. This means that the basic pulley system can easily be adapted for different functions and uses. Such a pulley system only requires a variable speed pulley to operate.

Due to their variable nature, a variable speed pulley is only used in fixed and compound systems. A fixed system holds the pulley shaft in a fixed position. A compound system mixes both the fixed axle and the moving axle system. The compound system produces many more power multiplications than the fixed position one. The main benefit of keeping the axle fixed is that it provides additional stability.

In theory, the pulleys in a variable speed pulley system are weightless. This reduces friction when they are operated which in turn reduces the amount of energy lost. The pulley does not change the work done, but it does reduce the amount of force required to make it work. Additional pulleys added to the system further reduce the force needed.

The adjustable or variable speed pulley in the system is spring loaded. The spring is used to maintain tension so that the machine works properly. This alters the rotation of the axle or shaft of the variable speed pulley.
The speed variation is controlled by the opening and closing of the flanges on the variable speed pulley. A flange is an edge or wall used to keep the belt from slipping off the pulley. Variable pulleys still have flanges at either end to keep the chain on the pulley, but they have a set of movable flanges that can help the chain move at different speeds. If the chain travels over a smaller section of the pulley, the chain will travel at a faster rate and will travel slower if it travels over a larger section of the pulley.

The main advantage of the variable speed pulley is that it is inexpensive. It allows various uses without having to change or modify the equipment. It’s strong, quiet, and has an almost infinite speed range depending on the pulley ratio limits.
