What’s a Vergence?

Vergence is the movement of both eyes in opposite directions to maintain visual perception of an object. There are two types: convergence for close objects and divergence for farther distances. Corrective eyewear or surgery can resolve focus issues.

Vergence is the simultaneous movement of both eyes in opposite directions for a person to maintain visual perception of the object. Basically, this means that the eyes will move in the direction of the object, locking the center of the pupils on it. This keeps the object in focus at all times, allowing the person to maintain eye contact with it. There are actually two different forms of convergence, one explaining how eyes work for near objects and the other for farther distances.

The form of convergence that deals with close objects, such as looking at your nose or a small splinter in your hand, is convergence. This, in extreme situations, is what is referred to as cross-eyed vision. For example, if you are holding a small splinter of wood in your hand, you need a close-up view to remove it. The closer the hand gets to the face, the more the eyes move, until both are somewhere closer inward towards the nose. To see toe-in in action, stand in front of a mirror, lean forward as far as possible, and focus on the center of your nose. The eyes will roll in as far as possible so that the centers of the pupils can focus on the required spot.

Divergence is the second form of vision, dealing with objects that are further away. An example of this type of vergence would be a bird flying from left to right in front of a person. For the eyes to maintain eye contact with the bird, the eyes will move in the same direction. However, in this case, the right eye would move away from the nose, while the left eye would rotate towards it. In this look, the eyes will stay parallel to each other to keep the bird in focus. A good experiment to see divergence in action would be to move away from a mirror and focus your eyes on a point to the left or right of it. The eyes will rotate equally to maintain contact with the object.

Vergence is basically a form of vision that people use to keep their attention on any specific object or area. When there is a convergence or divergence problem, corrective eyewear can be used to resolve focus issues. If that doesn’t work, corrective surgery may be your only option. This form of vision is a must have, and when problems arise with it various different strategies will be discussed to make sure that convergence, near or far, is a vision task that can be easily accomplished.
