Walk-behind forklifts are smaller versions of conventional forklifts used to lift and move pallets and bulk goods. They can be manually operated or self-propelled, with adjustable load arms and hydraulic pumps for lifting. Manual models are called pallet trucks and have limited lift distance, while self-driving models are electrically propelled and used for heavier loads. Both types are steered from behind via a steering wheel or arm.

A walk-behind forklift is a smaller version of a conventional push forklift used to lift and move pallets and bulk goods. As the name indicates, these forklifts are either manually operated or self-propelled and steered manually from behind via a steering rod. The bed of a walk-behind forklift is very similar to the larger motorized versions and consists of two flat arms designed to slip into openings on a pallet or under a suitably stable load. These load arms can be adjusted to accommodate different load widths and most have a fold-down feature that prevents the load from sliding off the arms during transport. The loading floor is raised and lowered via a hydraulic pump which can be operated manually or electrically.

Forklifts are material handling vehicles specially designed to handle palletized goods. The most familiar form of this vehicle is the ubiquitous ride-on type commonly found in most department stores, shops, and factories. Smaller walk-behind forklifts are equally popular workhorses and make it easier to move smaller loads in tight spaces. These forklifts are divided into two broad categories: manual and self-propelled. Both are driven from behind by the operator and steered by turning a wheel, lever or steering arm.

Walk-behind manual forklift models are designed to remove pallets off the ground and only move them around, and as a result have limited lift distance capability. Often known as pallet trucks, these walk-behind forklifts are most often found in warehouses where individual pallets are regularly moved. Equipped with a set of static wheels at the front of the load compartment and a set of steerable wheels at the rear, these forklift trucks have a load bed that lifts and tips via a hand or foot-operated hydraulic pump. The rear steer wheels are turned via a separate steer arm or the handle of the hydraulic pump.

Walk-behind self-driving forklift models are typically electrically propelled by a motor that drives a set of rubber drive wheels. These forklifts are most commonly used to lift heavier loads consisting of multiple pallets. They also typically feature the same rack and pinion lift mechanism found on driver-driven models, allowing pallets to be lifted onto racks or loading ramps. They are steered in the same way as manual types by means of a steering wheel or arm located at the rear of the forklift. The cargo bed on this type of walk-behind forklift is usually raised and lowered by a hydraulic pump driven by the traction motor.
