What’s a Wax Salon?

Waxing salons specialize in removing body hair using hot wax or sugar paste. The procedure can be intimate and draw blood, so hygiene procedures are important. Some estheticians are also trained in laser hair removal, a more expensive but permanent option.

A waxing salon is a type of beauty salon that specializes in removing body hair with different types of wax. Both men and women could go to a waxing salon to remove unwanted hair from their legs, underarms, bikini area and face. Some men may also want to remove hair from their chest and back. Waxing is considered the most effective type of temporary hair removal because the hair is pulled out at the roots and doesn’t need to be waxed again for 6-8 weeks.

In a waxing salon, the esthetician usually uses hot wax to remove hair. Wax is made from paraffin or beeswax mixed with a resin to make it sticky and a lubricant to help the wax come off the skin more easily. The esthetician spreads the heated wax over the hair and skin, then presses a muslin cloth onto the wax. The wax cools slightly and sticks to the hair and cloth. The beautician rips off the cloth, taking wax and hair with him.

Some hair removal salons use sugar as a hair removal method. Sugar is an ancient technique that has been used for hygiene in the Far and Middle East for centuries. Instead of wax, this technique uses a thick, sugar-based paste to remove hair. The waxing salon esthetician applies a thin layer of warm paste to the hair and peels it off with a muslin or paper towel. Some people believe that sugaring is less painful than waxing because the sugar paste only sticks to the hair and not the skin.

Waxing hair removal can draw blood, especially if it’s your first time, and can be a very intimate procedure for people who get waxed on or around their genitals. For these reasons, an esthetician at a waxing salon should adhere to standard hygiene procedures, such as wearing protective gloves and clean wax. An antiseptic is usually applied to the skin prior to waxing and applicator sticks and muslin cloths cannot be reused. A clean or disposable seat cover should also be used.

Some waxing salon estheticians are also trained in laser hair removal, a permanent type of hair removal. In this procedure a small laser is waved on unwanted hair. When the laser is activated, it burns in the follicle and kills the hair, preventing it from growing back. Laser hair removal usually has to be done several times to remove all the hair, and is much more expensive than waxing.
