What’s a Web Button?

Web buttons are small graphics used for advertising specific programs or applications on a website. They act as links to the advertised application’s website and are largely cosmetic and commercial. They can also be used to advertise products or services the site creator likes. Care must be taken to place them without interrupting the flow of the page.

A web button is a small advertising tool hosted on a website. It is a small graphic element that is typically used to advertise a specific program or application that the site creator used in building the website. A web button often doubles as a link, linking the active site to the website of the advertised application. Largely cosmetic and commercial in nature, web buttons do little more than highlight the tools used in building a website.

In many cases, a web button acts like a message “brought to you” by a traditional media advertising organization. Essentially, the web button tells the website reader which applications are responsible for creating the layout and appearance of a page, allowing the end user to learn more about that particular application if its capabilities strike a chord. It is usually completely unrelated to the specific content of a page; in this sense it can be blocked with adblocking software or ignored without compromising the message on the page.

By clicking on a web button, the page reader will take the reader to the main page of that particular application. This allows the reader to obtain additional information about the software, including purchase information such as cost, availability, and so on, if desired. Web buttons are another trend towards commercializing every aspect of the internet; in other words, the equivalent of a virtual billboard.

Web buttons are also sometimes used to advertise products or services that the site creator likes. Working in the same way as buttons advertising the applications used to create the site, they provide a quick link to the recommended site. This type of button may not be directly related to the creation of the original page, but the suggestion is that if the reader likes the same things that the site creator likes, they will probably like the site advertised via the web button.

When adding web buttons to a website, the creator must be careful not to interrupt the flow of the page. Web buttons should be placed where they can be easily found, without disturbing the actual content of the site. Typical locations for web buttons include along the bottom left or right corners of each site’s main page, allowing the reader to absorb the content while keeping the intrusiveness of advertising to a minimum.
