What’s a Weigh Conveyor?

Weigh conveyors are used by manufacturing plants to weigh materials and products. They are typically small blocks added to a larger conveyor belt and can weigh 15 to 150 items per minute. They use a belt made of fabric, PVC, or rubber to move items and ensure correct weights. Large plants may use multiple blocks to increase production times.

A weigh conveyor is a type of conveyor used by many manufacturing plants to weigh the materials used and manufactured in the plants. Such a conveyor is typically not a whole conveyor belt but a cheaper small block scale that is added to a larger conveyor belt but tends to lose effectiveness with larger sizes. While there are many speed settings for this type of conveyor, most blocks fall within a certain range and are usually capable of weighing 15 to 150 items in a minute. To move objects, a belt is used on the weighing block; it is usually made of woven material, rubber or polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

Most manufacturing plants produce or fill items up to a certain weight. For example, a ketchup bottle is filled by weight, whether the ketchup fills the bottle completely or leaves some space. To ensure all items weigh the correct amount, a weigh belt is used. This can be used by almost any industry, as long as the industry doesn’t produce items that are too heavy for the block.

While an entire conveyor belt may have a weighing system, this is typically very expensive and usually ineffective. This is because each section of the belt would have to have special sensors and technology to weigh each item. A less expensive solution is to use a weigh conveyor block. The block is typically large enough to hold only one item and is added somewhere in the middle of a larger conveyor belt. Large manufacturing plants often use multiple blocks at once to increase production times.

The speed of a weigh belt varies between different models, but most are capable of checking 15 to 150 pieces per minute. The speed is usually set to be the same as the conveyor belt it is attached to, or slightly slower to give the block time to accurately weigh the item. Most weigh conveyors have different speed settings, so users have room to adjust the speed.

A belt is used with a weigh conveyor to move items off the larger conveyor belt and to keep them moving through the production line. The belt can be made from different materials, but common materials are fabric, PVC, or rubber. If the manufacturing facility is legally required to use a specific belt material, either for strength or hygiene, it should check the belt material before purchasing a weigh block.
