The article discusses various types of welding, including arc welding, electrofusion welding, gas metal arc welding (MIG), tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), and plasma arc welding (PAW). Each type has its own advantages and is used in different applications such as construction, ship building, and large machine production.

A weld is the joining of two different pieces of metal into a single weld assembly. In other words, a weld is what is produced when several pieces of metal are welded together. A finished product design is called a weld profile. A weldment design determines the type of weld assembly produced. It should be designed taking into account the function that the metal is to perform when being welded together.

There are different types of welds and there are more types of welds. Arc welding uses an electric arc to fuse a base or parent metal with the added metal. The current used can be direct or it can be an alternating current.

Electrofusion welding is mainly used for large horizontal welds where two large metal sheets need to be welded together. This type of welding can be used in the production of large machines. Electrofusion welding deposits the additional or welded metal in the space between the two pieces of metal that are to be joined.

Gas metal arc welding, also known as metallic inert gas (MIG) welding, is a type of welding that uses a gas to protect the area being welded. The process reduces oxidation and allows very thin sheets to be welded together. It is also relatively easy to automate MIG welds, so this type of welding could be found where robotic methods are used.

Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, also called gas tungsten arc welding, generates the heat needed to weld metal using tungsten electrodes as part of the arc. A metal filler wire may be used and the gas is usually a mixture of argon and helium. TIG welding is often used where the welds need to be thin, of high quality and with a good final finish.

Another type of welding comes from shielded metal arc welding (SMAW). This is one of the oldest methods of creating welds. It is also very flexible and versatile for a variety of different welding projects. In this type of welding, the heat generated fuses the coated electrode and the metal to be welded together, creating an alloy of the weld metals. This type of welding is found in pipelines, ship building and construction work.

In plasma arc welding (PAW), electrodes and ionized gases create a very hot plasma jet. The plasma jet is aimed at the weld zone to melt the metal. This type of weld is used when speed is important or when a deeper weld is required.
