A whisker post is a type of mast used to support the jib on sailboats. It is typically made of wood or metal and is used to secure the sails in position. The whisker pole is the lightest of all the masts and is used to connect the main mast to the forward section of the boat. It is available in standard sizes and can be easily replaced if damaged.

A whisker post is a form of mast used to help support the jib portion as the ship sails upwind. These poles belong to a part of the basic configuration of sailboats and yachts known as the mast. Essentially, a spar is a round piece of wood or metal that is part of the basic equipment of a sailboat. Along with the whisker post, other types of masts include the masts, gaffs, patios, and barriers found on the boat. Each of these different types of masts plays a role in securing the sails in position, so the boat can be steered in any desired direction, using airflow as the force for movement. The whisker pole is perhaps the lightest of all the different types of masts used as part of the standard equipment on a sailing yacht.

Whisker posts are also constructed from hardwood that has been sealed against moisture and moisture. Some versions are built with steel and similar hard metals. Like their wooden counterparts, the metal posts will be treated and sealed, so the material will resist corrosion from the elements. Held in place with a series of screws, it’s not unusual for a spare pole to be kept somewhere on the sailboat, in case any sort of damage occurs during the voyage.

The main function of the whisker pole has to do with the correct attachment and operation of the boom sail. Like a triangular shaped sail, the boom helps control the speed and direction of the sailboat or yacht while underway. The mustache pole provides a connection between the main mast and the forward section of the boat, allowing the boom sail to be fully unfurled for use in catching wind.

The whisker post dimensions are pretty standard so there is no problem getting the right length for most sailboats. Marinas generally have a number of different sizes in stock so replacements are readily available when needed. Additionally, most shipbuilding companies will also make a line of whisker sticks that are custom designed for the sailboats they build and sell.
