A winch pole is a bar that is attached to the front of a boat trailer and used to mount a winch system. It raises the winch higher and keeps it off the trailer frame. Different sizes of trailers and boats require different sizes of winch poles, and accessories like spare tires can also be mounted on them.
A winch pole is an accessory that can be added to or come with a boat trailer. Such trailers are used to transport boats overland by attaching them to a towing vehicle such as a pickup truck. To get the boat onto the trailer, a winch is usually used to pull the boat forward. This winch is mounted to a winch post, which is essentially a bar that is secured to the front of the trailer. This bar is usually angled away from the boat to provide a strong contact point for the winch system.
The device used to transport the boat to the trailer features a drum around which a cable is wound several times. The drum is mounted to a frame by a shaft, and the shaft is attached to a handle that can be manually rotated to feed the cable or retracted as required. Some winches have a motor instead of a handle to power the system. The entire winch system is secured to a winch post for various reasons. First, the winch post keeps the winch off the trailer frame so the weight of the boat and winch does not compromise the strength of the trailer frame; second, the post raises the winch higher than it would be mounted, making it possible to haul boats with larger hulls.
Various sizes of trailers and boats will require a different size of winch pole. Larger boats will require a post that raises the winch higher up on the trailer frame. The cable end of the winch system features a hook that will engage with a receiver of some kind on the hull of the boat, so the higher the bar, the more cable can be retracted, thus pulling the boat forward as possible. Some smaller boats will only need a small winch pole, or may not need a pole at all. The winch can be mounted directly to the trailer in some cases.
Other accessories can sometimes be mounted to the winch pole as well. One of the most common pole-mounted accessories is the spare tire for the trailer. This keeps the tire out of the way and prevents it from taking up usable space elsewhere on the trailer. The tire will also not interfere with the function of the winch.
