What’s a Wok?

Woks are an essential utensil for cooking Asian cuisine. They can be electric or traditional, with non-stick coating being a useful feature. Electric woks have even heating, while traditional woks are more versatile. Kits with utensils and grills are available for both types.

Asian and Asian-inspired food is rapidly growing in popularity, as is cooking it. One utensil for cooking authentic Asian dishes is the wok. This is a large frying pan with high sloped sides, handles and a lid. It is especially suitable for frying food.

A wok can be electric or it can sit on a small grate above the eye of the stove. The size and shape of the pan allows the cook to fry meats and vegetables, moving them towards and away from the main heat source to ensure even cooking. A regular wok may be less expensive, but it’s also more difficult to use than an electric one.

A cook needs to know how his individual wok distributes heat to cook food properly. However, once a cook has mastered the technique, he can use the pan on an electric stove, a gas stove, or over a fire. Traditional woks are far more versatile than electric ones.

An electric wok has the great advantage of even heating. The heating element heats all parts of the pan evenly, with no hot or cold spots. This is a boon for novice cooks, or those who aren’t sure if they have the skills needed for a regular one.

With the advent of non-stick coating, a wok can have this feature, whether it’s electric or not. The non-stick coating is definitely a great feature, as less fat can also be used for the cooking process and the cook won’t have to worry about food sticking to the pan. Bamboo utensils, traditionally used when cooking with a wok, are also suitable for non-stick surfaces. Of course, even in the highest quality pan, a nonstick cooking surface won’t last forever, which means it will likely need to be replaced more quickly than an uncoated one.

Non-electric woks are usually priced the same as other pans of a comparable size. Some are sold in kits that include the grill and utensils, and if the cook lacks these extra components, such a kit is probably the best buy. Electric woks are a bit more expensive, and most also include utensils and even recipe booklets. This frying pan is a truly indispensable kitchen utensil for those interested in Asian cuisine.
