What’s a Zerg?

The Zerg in StarCraft are a race of aliens who assimilate other species into their gene pool to adapt. They have no technology and are controlled by the Overmind. Zerging is a strategy of overwhelming opponents with cheap units.

In the real-time strategy computer game Starcraft®, the Zerg are a race of aliens who pose a constant threat to all other species in the universe. The other races of the StarCraft® universe, the Terrans and the Protoss, rely on advanced technologies to wage war on each other; however, the Zerg have no technology. By assimilating other species into their gene pool, they mutate themselves to adapt to whatever task is at hand.

The vast majority of Zerg have no sense of individuality, but rather are controlled by the Overmind. This is a manifestation of their collective consciousness directing them across the universe, causing them to assimilate any species with useful traits and destroy those that don’t. The Overmind does not directly control all individual Zerg, but instead delegates this duty to self-aware generals called cerebrates. While these cerebrates have individual thought, they are unable to challenge the Overmind.

The Zerg do not build cities or settlements in the traditional sense, but rather farm them. All of their structures are organic, with the exception of the pre-existing buildings they infest. As such, each Zerg colony is essentially a giant life form, developing additional organs to make the necessary genetic modifications.

Each Zerg structure that is farmed produces a bio-matter called creep that covers the nearby area. The creep provides nourishment to the Zerg, and everyone recovers from wounds much faster when in contact with it. Some units have special abilities if they are in ambush.

All Zerg originally start out as larvae, which resemble armored flatworms. These larvae contain all the genetic information needed to mutate into whatever type of creature is needed. If raw materials are needed, the larvae can mutate into drones, which will harvest any natural resource at hand, or mutate into Zerg structures.

This race uses many different creatures on the battlefield. At the bottom step sits the Zergling, a small and voracious predator that is extremely dangerous in large numbers. The Hydralisk looks vaguely like a worm and shoots razor-sharp spines at its enemies. The Ultralisk, a monstrously huge creature, uses razor-sharp blades on its appendages to shred the enemies of the Zerg.
The Zerg race in StarCraft® was designed with the ability to create large numbers of units quickly and cheaply. Thus, in the parlance of real-time strategy games, “Zerging” has become a term for overwhelming your opponent with a large number of cheap and relatively weak units. This strategy often only works well at the beginning of a game.
