What’s a ZV port?

The ZV port allows laptops to have advanced video capabilities by providing a dedicated video bus. ZV-enhanced PCMCIA ports accept standard and MPEG cards for capturing, displaying, and recording full-frame video in real-time. ZV port cards can also be used for live video conferencing, gaming, and home movie making. Video input ports vary on MPEG ZV compatible cards, and ZV port cards are available wherever computers are sold.

An enlarged video port (ZV port) is a type of laptop technology that allows laptop computers to have the same flexibility and capability as desktop computers when it comes to advanced video applications. Specifically, the ZV port provides a dedicated one-way bus port for sending video signals directly to the video card, bypassing the computer’s processing unit and system bus. Thus, the ZV port can capture, display and record full-frame video in real time from various input devices such as digital cameras or television tuners.

ZV port technology is an extended standard of the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA). The PCMCIA port on a laptop is the port that accepts credit card style devices, such as WiFi cards. A ZV-enhanced PCMCIA port accepts standard cards in addition to ZV-compliant Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) cards. A ZV-compliant MPEG card uses internal software to change the pin-out configuration of the port in order to provide a dedicated video bus. The card also has built-in ports to accept video input signals. By connecting devices to the video input ports on the ZV board, the ZV port becomes a capture port.

Using the ZV port with an MPEG ZV compatible card, a laptop or notebook can capture television programs and record them to a hard drive. The incoming signal is first displayed in full screen, then the software passes the signal to the CPU for processing for storage on the hard disk. A ZV port card also captures digital audio and can playback in full digital surround sound. The MPEG ZV card is the equivalent of an add-on desktop TV tuner card.

In addition to program capture, a ZV port card can also be used for live video conferencing streaming, gaming applications, and home movie making. The software offers the ability to edit footage for a professional home video studio.

Video input ports vary on MPEG ZV compatible cards depending on the card. Most cards include composite, S-Video, and cable video input. Some use a single proprietary port that uses a multipurpose cable or dongle that accommodates all of these tasks, while also supporting a remote control. Typically, ZV port cards also feature composite and S-Video output for watching movies you’ve created on an external monitor such as a television.

ZV port cards are available wherever computers are sold. Before purchasing a ZV port card, make sure your laptop or notebook has a ZV-enhanced PCMCIA port.
