Absolute humidity is the measure of water vapor in the air expressed as a value, and is different from relative humidity. It is determined using the mass of water vapor in the air and is expressed in terms of density. Humidity is important in climate and weather services use it to express what ambient temperature feels like. Relative humidity uses the ratio of vapor pressure to saturation vapor pressure and is often referred to when using a humidistat. Humidity is also related to air psychometry, steam and humidification, dehumidification, and recommended relative humidity. High humidity can promote the growth of dangerous bacteria, fungi, viruses or mites.

The measure of the amount of water vapor in the air at any given time is called absolute humidity. It is expressed as a value, specific, absolute or relative value and should not be confused with relative humidity, which is expressed as a percentage. In the field of air psychometry, humidity measurements are important elements.
Absolute humidity is determined using the mass of water vapor in the air. It can be expressed in kilograms of water vapor or pounds of water vapor. The mass of water vapor is then considered in terms of volume. This measure of density is usually expressed using grams per cubic meter or pounds per cubic foot. In other words, absolute humidity measures the density of water vapor.

Humidity is an important aspect of climate and provides an additional aspect to measuring the environment in terms of temperature. More specifically, absolute humidity provides a means for weather services to express what ambient temperature feels like. A higher absolute humidity, and therefore a relative humidity, means the climate is much warmer. The air is more humid and generally feels heavy or thick.

Weather during high humidity is sometimes referred to as humid or muggy. If the humidity level is very low, the air can feel very dry or even stale. In places where the humidity is very low, people may have dry skin more often than usual. A higher level of humidity makes people sweat or sweat more.

Relative humidity uses the ratio of vapor pressure to saturation vapor pressure. If a home or weather service refers to humidity or uses a humidistat, it is most often referring to relative humidity. Relative humidity uses the absolute humidity, or current humidity level, in relation to the maximum humidity to give a percentage.

Also related to humidity measurements are air psychometry, steam and humidification, dehumidification, and recommended relative humidity. Humidity is a central aspect in the study of air and the cycle of humidity and water. Respiratory conditions or diseases are also closely related to humidity. Humid air, when the air is above the recommended humidity level (RH), can promote the growth of dangerous bacteria, fungi, viruses or mites. For this reason, public buildings need to measure their own humidity levels and always pay close attention to humidity levels.
