What’s adhesive putty?

Adhesive caulk is used in construction and home improvement to seal seams, prevent water, dust, air, and insects from entering cracks. It is made from silicone, polyurethane, polyether, polysulfide silyl-terminated polyurethane, or acrylic sealants. Adhesive mastic has a longer life than other mastics due to its adhesive properties. Proper application requires clean surfaces and following the manufacturer’s instructions. Acrylic caulking is preferred for neat finishes, while silicone caulking is used for waterproofing and fire retardant properties. Other types of mastic include sandblast, gutter, and fire caulk.

Adhesive caulk is a material used primarily in the construction and home improvement industries to join and seal seams. Adheres firmly to surfaces and fills gaps. Filling the cracks with this type of flexible sealing compound not only helps prevent water from seeping into the cracks, but also prevents dust, air, or insects from entering those cracks. Typically, caulk is made from prepackaged materials such as silicone, polyurethane, polyether, or polysulfide silyl-terminated polyurethane and acrylic sealants.

What makes adhesive putty different from other types of putty is its adhesive property. Most caulks have a fixed life span, after which they must be reapplied or “re-sealed.” Adhesive mastic, however, typically has a longer life than many other mastics due to the additional adhesive properties in the mastic. However, depending on the particular application of the adhesive caulk, resealing may be required.

When caulking, one must be very careful about the amount of caulk applied. Too much or too little of the caulk can affect the appearance and protection offered by the caulk. Proper application typically requires that surfaces to receive the mastic be clean. The rubbing alcohol is often helpful in removing any grease that may be preventing a tight bond with the mastic. Proper application also requires that the manufacturer’s instructions on the caulk itself be followed.

Caulk is a moist substance with a texture similar to peanut butter. It is typically applied with the use of a caulk gun and works via a chemical reaction that causes the material to harden when exposed to air. Before hardening, however, the mastic penetrates the crack and even the small pores of the material on which it is applied. After it has dried well, you may choose to paint it to blend in with the color of the surrounding material. Alternatively, you can purchase colored adhesive putty.

For general home caulking needs, acrylic or silicone caulk can also be used. Acrylic caulking is generally preferred for a neat caulking finish. On the other hand, silicone caulking is generally used for applications that require waterproofing. Silicone caulk is popular for its fire retardant, non-stick, and rubber-like properties. It also has low chemical reactivity and low toxicity.

Some of the other common types of mastic are sandblast mastic, gutter mastic, and fire mastic. Sandblast mastic is usually used with tile and other flooring applications. Gutter caulk is used to prevent leaks in gutters, and fire caulk is used to contain flames and heat in a furnace or fireplace.
