Aluminum cladding is a protective coating applied to building materials, commonly used in windows, doors, and exterior cladding. It can be produced through extrusion and offers durability and easy maintenance, but is more expensive than other forms of cladding.
Aluminum cladding is a cladding created by using a thin coating of aluminum on the outside of the product. Coating in general is the application of one type of substance or material over a different material, effectively creating a protective layer over the underlying material. The use of aluminum, sometimes spelled “aluminium”, in creating high quality siding is common, especially with architectural products such as windows and doors.
In some cases, aluminum cladding is produced using a process known as extrusion. This is usually the case when aluminum acts as a skin over another metal. Essentially, the process requires compressing the two metals together using some type of high-pressure equipment or using some sort of mold to create the bond. In both processes, extreme and constant heat temperatures are required to create the necessary bond.
A number of building materials are clad with aluminum. For example, wooden window cases are sometimes fitted with aluminum cladding as a means of adding strength to the window casings and sashes. The outer skin helps protect the wood from damage caused by the elements, extending the life of the casings for several years. As an added benefit, the presence of the coating makes cleaning the casing much easier using basic cleaning products.
The same general concept is often used with making exterior doors faced with aluminum siding. Thanks to the protective skin, the door can withstand extreme weather conditions without deformation or deterioration for many years. With modern manufacturing methods, the thin leather can easily be colored to any desired color and can also be embossed with wood grain designs, allowing the door to have the look of natural wood.
Aluminum cladding can also be used as the exterior cladding of a house. Aluminum panels come in a wide range of colors and hold up well in virtually any climate. Consequently, the house equipped with this type of external cladding does not have to be painted; simply washing the upholstery from time to time will keep the exterior looking fresh and clean.
In terms of cost, products made with aluminum cladding are more expensive than those created using vinyl and other forms of cladding. The advantage is that aluminum offers greater protection and allows the product to look like new for a longer period of time. This means that the life of the products is extended significantly, allowing the consumer to use the product for longer periods of time before replacement becomes necessary.
