What’s an accident book?

Print anything with Printful

An incident log records accidents and injuries in the workplace, with details such as time, location, injuries sustained, and medical treatment received. Accident books can be in print or electronic format, and are also used in other settings such as camps and recreational facilities. They should not be confused with accident books sold by publishers, which provide general information about accidents and personal injury situations.

An incident log is a type of log in which incidents are recorded. Typically, workplaces maintain injury records so that employers or other management personnel can record the injuries their employees experience. Each accident report book entry includes some type of information about the accident, the injured person, the management personnel on duty, and the person or establishment that provided first aid or medical assistance. Typically, companies can choose between print and electronic versions of accident books. A work accident book should not be confused with the types of accident books sold by traditional book publishers.

Traditionally, an incident book was an actual binding book. These are still available, but nowadays accident books are also available in electronic format. Some are online-based, allowing authorized parties to access them from any Internet-enabled computer. Others come in a software format, meaning they must be installed on a computer and authorized parties can only access them from that computer. Sometimes, these formats allow software to be installed in such a way that a network of computers, rather than just one, can access the incident books.

Typically, each accident log contains pages for details of any accidents, incidents, or injuries to be recorded. Regardless of paper or electronic format, most accident books these days offer sample forms with spaces for recording specific details. Typically, those details include the time, date, and location of the accident or incident, as well as the injuries sustained and medical treatment received by the injured party. Details of any additional or ongoing treatments received away from company property may also be recorded. Usually, the signatures of the person who suffered the accident, the person responsible and whoever performed first aid are required.

Although an accident reporting book is most commonly found in a work setting, other locations have a need and use of accident books. For example, any type of day or night camp, such as those for children and athletes, may need an accident log. Also, other types of venues may need accident books to record customer accidents and injuries, rather than employees. Such venues may include community recreation centers, gymnasiums and other sporting facilities, various permanent and revolving tourist attractions and theme parks, carnivals and festivals.

It is important not to confuse a work accident book with the types of accident books sold by traditional publishers. These types of books provide readers with general and specific information about certain types of accidents. Sometimes, those books are specific to certain types of jobs. Other times, the books provide insight into other types of personal injury situations. They may also include specific legal information for certain regions.
