What’s an ADSL Filter?

ADSL service provides high-speed internet over telephone lines, but interference can occur. An ADSL line filter is a device that filters ADSL service from voice traffic. It should be installed on every line except the modem/router line. Filters can be purchased from electronics stores. A line splitter can be used to divide the incoming line into two separate legs, but it requires a telecom employee to install. ADSL line filters range in price from $4 to $11 USD.

Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) service provides high-speed Internet service to homes and businesses over standard copper telephone lines. While voice traffic and Internet service occupy different frequency bands allowing for both services to be used simultaneously, interference can occur. An ADSL line filter is a small device that plugs into a telephone wall jack, featuring a female RJ-11 port for a standard telephone line. This places the filter between the incoming telco signal and the telephone, filtering the ADSL service. An ADSL line filter should be installed on every line in the room except the ADSL modem/router line.

The frequencies used by the ADSL service are higher bandwidth than those used by telco voice traffic, but the signals of the low end of the ADSL band and the signals of the high end of the voice traffic band can interact creating static, interference, echoes, and other anomalies. An ADSL line filter will keep phone lines clear of ADSL frequencies. Lines going to analog modems and fax machines should also be used with an ADSL line filter.

In some cases, ADSL providers that make a DSL modem available to clients for self-installation will also include one or more line filters with the installation package. If more filters are needed, they can be purchased from most electronics stores and online sellers. If a customer chooses to supply their own modem for use with ADSL service, they will need to purchase ADSL filters. The DSL modem itself will have a built-in phone port filter built into the back of the device. The phone connected to this port should not require an external filter.

In some cases people prefer to set up inbound ADSL service using a line splitter on the incoming telephone line at the entry point into the building. By dividing the incoming line into two separate legs, a single ADSL line filter can be placed on the leg that goes to the wall outlets. The remaining unfiltered line will go directly to a single jack where the ADSL modem will be installed. This configuration has the advantage of using only one ADSL filter, but a telecom employee must install the line splitter. Also, the unfiltered wall outlet is the only place the modem can work, making it inconvenient if you decide to rearrange your home or office later.

ADSL line filters range in price from about $4 US Dollars (USD) to $11 USD or more. A special design for wall phones includes an ADSL line filter built into the mounting plate.
