Aeration tanks increase the amount of air in liquid, commonly used in wastewater recovery. Two main methods are forcing air through liquid or liquid through air. There are two types of aeration tanks, shallow and wide for air forced through and tall for water into air. Air to water tanks have nozzles that force air through wastewater, while water to air tanks have a column-like tube with a cone-shaped sprayer that breaks liquid into fine streams and mist to absorb additional air.
An aeration tank is a place where a liquid is held to increase the amount of air inside it. The most common uses of aeration tanks are in wastewater recovery, as the high oxygen levels will increase the rate at which the water is cleaned. There are two main methods of aerating liquid: forcing air through liquid or forcing liquid through air. Both methods are common, but aeration tanks are very different between the two types.
Very common is the reclamation of waste water using an aeration tank. The water is mixed with biological agents and then aerated. The increase in oxygen promotes the growth of beneficial biological material. That material will consume unwanted waste products held in the water. Finally, the beneficial material will grow due to the increase in oxygen and food, which makes filtering from clean water easier.
There are two main types of aeration tanks. When a tank has air forced through it, it is generally very shallow and wide. Tanks that put water into the air are usually tall and take up much less space on the ground than other tanks. In both cases, the tanks are typically open to the air, allowing for further natural aeration.
In an air to water aeration tank, the tanks have the aeration system built into the bottom. This usually consists of nozzles that force air through the wastewater. In many ways, this system works like the aeration system in a home aquarium, only on a larger scale. Nozzles cover the bottom of the tank, continuously forcing air upwards. Additionally, these tanks usually have a system that displaces the water, making for a more complete mix.
These tanks have an added feature that is not present on other styles of aeration tanks. Since the gases are pumped into the water through the system, operators can change the gas mix however they want. This allows them to add additional oxygen for particularly dirty water or other gases for other purposes.
A water-to-air aeration tank is a little more complicated. These tanks have a column-like tube that comes through the center of the tank. At the top of the column is a cone-shaped sprayer. The water from the tank is pumped into the column, where it hits the sprayer. The cone breaks the liquid into fine streams and mist. As this water collects against the sides of the tank and in the air, it absorbs a lot of additional air before falling back into the tank.
