An air chisel is a pneumatic tool that can accept various inserts, including chisels, to perform tasks quickly. It operates with compressed air and can be used to split metal, cut bolts, and more. Different chisels and inserts are available for different jobs.
An air chisel, or air hammer, is a pneumatic tool consisting of a piston capable of repeatedly extending a metal insert. Jackhammers are typically able to accept a variety of inserts, such as punches, pickle forks, and chisels of different shapes. When fitted with an actual chisel insert, these devices can be used to quickly perform virtually any task that a regular chisel can be used for. The same tool can also be used for many other jobs if an insert other than a chisel is installed. Some type of retaining collar or clip is typically attached to the open end of the air bit to prevent the bit from falling out during use.
Jackhammers bear a superficial resemblance to handguns in that they consist of a handle, trigger, and barrel. An inlet connection is typically found on the handle and a source of compressed air must be connected to it for the tool to operate. Compressed air can enter the barrel of the mechanism when the trigger is pulled. A piston located in the barrel is then rapidly activated, causing a repetitive motion that gives the jackhammer its name. When a tool is inserted into the barrel, it is repeatedly propelled forward to create a chiselling, hammering, or splitting action.
Because jackhammers are commonly used with chisel inserts, they are often referred to as air chisels. The shank of a bit designed to be used with a particular air chisel typically has a certain diameter and length to ensure proper function, and a shank that is too small or too short can fall out during use. Air chisel shanks typically have a raised edge running around the circumference which may allow the tool to be locked in place with a retaining clip, collar or quick change chuck. Chisels using these devices are specifically created for pneumatic applications and can be damaged if they are hammered by hand.
The power offered by an air chisel can be used to perform jobs that are difficult, time consuming or impossible to do manually. Air chisels can be used to split sheet metal, exhaust pipes and body panels. Special chisels with hooked edges can be used to cut a clean line through the metal. Straight chisels can also be used to cut frozen bolts, and other tool inserts can do a variety of different jobs. Many jackhammer sets come complete with different chisels and other inserts.
