Air curtains, also known as air doors, create a barrier between two spaces and are used in various settings for different purposes. Proper placement and installation are crucial for their effectiveness.

People commonly recognize gates, windows and doors as barriers. However, few are likely to name air if asked to recommend an effective barrier. However, a barrier is exactly what an air curtain, also known as an air door, is designed to be. Factors that affect the effectiveness of air curtains include the amount of air, the velocity of the air and the height at which the machine is positioned.

An air curtain is a fan designed to create a barrier between two spaces. Air curtains are found in places such as the entrance to a building, the entrance to a cold room or in some industrial environments. These machines are usually set up to prevent the flow of certain things without inhibiting the flow of other things.

In food establishments, for example, air curtains are used to repel insects. In many industrial settings they are used to prevent the spread of dust to a cleaner area. In office buildings, they are often used for climate control. However, in all these cases, it could be counterproductive if the barrier inhibits the flow of people.

It is more common to find air curtains as downward air flows. These are generally recommended for spaces more than a couple of feet wide. There are cases, however, where air curtains are positioned to the sides of an opening. This provides a horizontal air barrier. These are generally best for narrow, tall spaces.

An air curtain can blow continuously, but it is common for machines to have triggers. For example, they can be triggered by opening a door. To be effective in both cases, such a machine requires a strong blowing component. Factors such as the elements the air curtain is designed to repel and the air pressure on each side affect how much air is needed and how fast it has to travel.

These machines can be integrated into the structure of a building or can be fixed to the structure. They are generally placed on the side of the inlet where there is material that needs to be rejected. For example, when the machines are used as an air conditioner, it is advisable to place them on the outside side of the entrance. To be effective, they must also be installed along the entire length of the area in which they are placed. Otherwise, unsecured areas are likely to be vulnerable to unwanted objects entering.
