What’s an Air Log?

[ad_1]

Air ducts convey heated or cooled air and are covered by air logs, with registers controlling distribution. Registers have slatted openings, with some having levers to adjust airflow. Grilles and diffusers come in different materials and shapes, allowing for design flexibility. Air register baffles can redirect airflow under curtains and chairs.

An air log is the cover of a duct. A system of ducts conveys the heated or cooled air, while the register controls its distribution in each room. Air ducts are hollow metal pipes. The air registers that fit into one end of each duct are also usually made of metal, although some are made of plastic or wood. An air register usually has horizontal and/or vertical slatted openings; their direction and width determine how heated or cooled air is distributed.

The slatted openings in the air registers are called linear grooves by the manufacturers. Some air registers have one direction of slats or slots, while others are multi-directional. Some types of rectangular air damper often have small levers located at the bottom of the foldable slats facing in different directions. This format allows different sections of slats to be opened or closed to allow more or less airflow in a room. One-piece air registers with fixed rather than movable openings are usually sold as grilles or grates.

Grill or grill air registers are usually made of wood or metal. Many of these have large square holes rather than linear slats or slots to distribute a wider airflow. A wooden air register is an ideal choice for a duct located on a wooden floor. Stainless steel or aluminum air registers may blend better on gray stone or slate floors. The different materials, colors and finishes of the grilles and air registers allow home designers to create cool or warm looks to fit specific decors.

Many registers are rectangular in shape, but one type of air register called a diffuser is often circular. The diffusers diffuse the air into the room, while the reed registers release it in rivulets. Diffusers are usually placed on the ceiling or near the top of a wall, while rectangular air registers tend to be at the bottom of a wall near the floor. Many air logs are also found on the floors.

An air register baffle is a low sided rectangular plastic device. It is designed to fit on a log located on a floor near curtains or seating. Without a baffle, the airflow from the straight slatted air registers will rise up into the curtains or seats. The flap prevents the airflow from traveling upwards and instead redirects it under chairs and curtains through the opening created by the low sides of the flap. Air register baffles are very inexpensive and can be purchased for less than $15 US Dollars (USD).
