What’s an Air Pressure Test?

Air pressure testing verifies the correct amount of air pressure in an object and checks for leaks. It is used on heating systems, plumbing, tanks, vehicles, and aerospace components. Common tests include vehicle tires and hoses, building structures, and plumbing systems.

An air pressure test is a method of verifying that the correct amount of air pressure is present in an object and of checking a containment system for air leaks due to a hole or gap. Air pressure testing or hydraulic testing is most often performed on a variety of objects from heating systems, plumbing, tanks and building spaces to vehicle and aerospace components such as tires, hoses or internal chambers. Testing air pressure generally requires a specialized fluid or type of air pressure gauge for the job of determining how much air is blown out with pressure.

A common type of air pressure test is performed on vehicle tires and hoses, such as those found on cars, bicycles, and other personal and commercial boats. A technician places a special air pressure gauge against a special valve, and the amount of pressure behind the expelled air is measured. The higher the pressure inside the tire walls or inside the tubes, the higher the pressure gauge reading. By adding more air, the pressure is safely raised to the levels required for proper vehicle operation. Also, water can be sprayed along the edge of the tires to make sure there are no leaks or cracks.

Another type of air pressure test is performed on the internal structure of a building or house. This air pressure test is performed by a heating and air technician who measures the flow of fresh air through the building’s air ducts and throughout the building. This can be useful for identifying leaks caused by cracks or breaks in the building structure, ductwork, or other spaces where air can escape to the outside. In most cases, a small amount of air leakage is required to create a continuous circulation and flow of healthy, oxygen-rich air in a home or office environment.

In plumbing or water systems, air pressure tests can be useful in determining if there are water or sewer leaks. By pumping safe levels of air into drains, pipes and tanks, the escaping air can determine if a repair is needed to reduce losses and damage to homes, property, roads, public water systems and commercial buildings. Plumbers often use air pressure testing to ensure pipes can handle both water pressure and the gases escaping as waste is naturally broken down in drains, pipes, septic systems, and sewage systems.
