An air riveter uses an air compressor to set pop rivets, making the process quicker and easier than using a hand riveter. It creates flat and even placement of rivets, resulting in a more professional look. It is convenient and can be easily rebuilt and owner maintained.

An air riveter, or auto riveter as it is commonly called, is a device that sets pop rivets through the use of an air compressor. This method of installing blind rivets is a much quicker and easier process than using a hand riveter. While many pop rivets are difficult to press and set by hand, the air riveter uses the power of compressed air to easily pop the rivet into place. Just as a nail gun makes driving nails in easier than using a hammer, the air riveter makes completing large sheet metal jobs much easier.

A pop rivet is a small fastener used in sheet metal fabrication. The rivet is driven into a pre-drilled hole and depressed to clamp the rivet into place, effectively holding the sheet metal in place. When using a hand rivet tool or rivet gun to squeeze out rivets, a metalworker’s hands can get sore and tired after just a few rivets. When using an air riveter to force rivets into place, however, the process is as simple as placing a rivet in the tool and pulling a trigger.

An added benefit of using the air riveter is the flat and even placement of the rivets. Often, a hand riveter will depress the rivet sideways or at a slight angle due to the uneven pressure applied by a worker’s hand. As the hand becomes more tired and fatigued, riveting becomes more sloppy. Because the air riveter never tires, the rivets are set straight and neat in a line, thus creating a more professional look in the finished job.

The invention of the small portable air compressor made using the air riveter much more convenient. By placing a small gasoline-powered air compressor on the ground, the task of riveting gutters becomes as easy as running an air line up to the roof line. These tools, accompanied by a cordless drill, can take standard gutter hours through installation. The most expensive investment in the package is the air compressor, as the air riveter is comparable in cost to a premium hammer.

Most air riveters can be easily rebuilt and owner maintained. With very few moving parts, typical maintenance requires just a drop or two of light oil before and after each use. The oil protects the internal parts of the riveter from rust caused by humidity in the air.
