An alteration tailor specializes in customizing or repairing existing clothing, using a tape measure and needle and thread or sewing machine. No formal education is required, but a good eye for detail and advanced math skills are necessary.

A tailor is a professional hamster who specializes in customizing or repairing existing clothing. He differs from a general tailor in that he does not normally create garments from fabrics, but merely alters and corrects existing garments. An alteration tailor may work for a department store, a private clothing manufacturer, or operate their business as an independent contractor.

Clothes presented to the tailor may belong to men, women or children. It can be newly acquired, unused clothes, lightly used clothes or clothes that are decades old. Alterations or repairs often range from simple to complex.

Although an alteration tailor may prefer that the person who will be wearing the garment have it when assessing the necessary adjustments, he may not have this advantage in many cases. Often, garments are presented to him with alteration or repair requests written on an attached tag. Not having a real human body to instantly gauge the success or progress of your work usually makes it more difficult.

Commonly requested garment repairs submitted to an alteration tailor include ripped or torn pockets, linings, jacket or pants, lapels and pocket flaps. Correcting these flaws may require hand or machine sewing. If the tears are extensive and irreparable, the damaged area may require replacement.

Change requests can be made for almost any part of a garment. Among the most common demands are the adjustment of the length of the sleeves or legs, the narrowing or expansion of the waist and the adjustment of the heights of the lapels or collars. Less common are requests for inserting or removing shoulder pads from jackets, blouses, shirts and coats.

Whether an alteration sews repairs or alters clothes, he typically uses a tape measure to measure the extent of alterations and mark the fabric accordingly. Marks indicating revision points are traditionally made with multicolored straight pins. If a garment needs restructuring, the spots are usually removed with a razor blade or a tool made for the purpose called a ripper.

Clothing modifications are finished using a needle and thread or a sewing machine. Hand sewing is normally applied to small areas that cannot be efficiently sewn by machine. When the seamster’s stitching is complete, he traditionally presses the garment by hand or machine before returning it to the customer.

Typically, no formal education is required for this job. It is usually a skill that is learned on the job, assisting an experienced tailor, hamster or seamstress. A good eye for detail and advanced math skills are usually required.
