An armory is a secure facility for storing weapons and ammunition, often located in central, well-guarded areas. It can be an isolated structure or built into another building. The contents are cataloged and guarded by military personnel, with access strictly controlled. Weapons can only be removed by qualified officers with good reason and their condition is recorded upon return.

An armory is a facility designated for the storage of weapons and ammunition. It’s not uncommon to see an armory used to house administrative offices and sometimes even training facilities, as armories are typically located in central, well-guarded areas making them logical choices for these purposes as well. As a general rule, access to the armory is strictly controlled so that weapons do not fall into the wrong hands.

There are several ways an armory can be designed. Classically, an armory is an isolated structure with a number of easily controlled rooms designed for the purpose of storing weapons, ammunition and other military supplies. In many cases, an armory is built of very solid materials to repel a break-in, and armories designed for firearms storage typically have secluded areas to store ammunition, for safety reasons.

An armory can also be built in another structure. An armory built into another structure will typically be much smaller, with limited storage space to store only those weapons you may need close at hand. Historically, such armories were built in castles and some wealthy homes so that people could defend themselves against invaders.

Modern armories are usually located on military bases. In some communities, historic armories were sold to private community members, who typically chose to renovate them and use them for a variety of tasks. When well restored and carefully cared for, historic armories often end up on historic place records, because many of these buildings are quite distinctive and impressive and deserve to be preserved in their current form.

A wide variety of weapons can be stocked in an armory. Obviously, the larger an armory is, the more flexible its potential uses are, making room for both large and small weapons along with other equipment such as uniforms. The contents of an armory are typically meticulously cataloged and routinely inspected for any signs of missing or damaged weapons, and an armory is guarded at all times by military personnel.

Persons wishing to take arms out of an armory must generally show qualifications and good reason for doing so, and are generally officers or accompanied by officers. When weapons are removed from an armory for use in training, military exercise or combat, their condition and identification marks are carefully recorded so that they can be re-deposited upon their return.
