What’s an asphalt rake?

Asphalt rakes are designed for paving and have rectangular heads with prongs. They can be made of aluminum or magnesium, with handles made of wood, fiberglass, or aluminum. They are used for leveling and smoothing asphalt and are also called paver rakes.

An asphalt rake works similar to a lawn rake. Each has a handle, rake head, and thick bolsters to strengthen the handle. Yet the two rakes are designed for different materials such as lawn rakes are for lawns and asphalt rakes are for asphalt. Garden rake teeth tend to be too long to allow for even raking of asphalt, and garden rake heads are usually not wide enough for efficient coverage when paving. Industrial asphalt rakes have a rectangular rake head with prongs attached to a handle and are used for professional applications of materials such as asphalt and concrete.

The side of an asphalt rake head with teeth is used for leveling asphalt, while the flat side is used for smoothing it. The rivets in the heads of some asphalt rakes help keep the rake heads from falling off during use. An industrial asphalt rake may have a steel shaft on the lower third of the handle to add strength. Some asphalt rakes may have an angled butt between the rake head and the handle on either side of the handle. These supports can be made from aluminum tubes.

The handles of the asphalt rakes as well as the heads can be made of aluminium. Some asphalt rake heads are made from aluminum, a fairly light metal, and magnesium. Lighter materials can reduce labor fatigue, but some paving jobs may require a stronger rake with stainless steel features. Heavy industrial applications usually require asphalt rake handles with a strong gripping surface.

Asphalt rake handles are also available in wood and fiberglass. A fiberglass handle may be light, but it can also splinter. To resolve this issue, there may be a sleeve available that fits over the handle. A sleeve can also extend the life of the handle. Asphalt rakes are also called paver rakes as they are used for raking and smoothing pavements.
