What’s an audiology assistant’s role?

An audiologist assistant supports licensed audiologists by performing tests, preparing patients, maintaining equipment, repairing hearing aids, and answering patient questions. A high school diploma and field competency training are required. The assistant can perform low-level testing procedures under direct supervision and may need to pass practical and written exams in some US states. Job opportunities are available in private practice, government hospitals, outpatient care centers, and clinics.

The audiologist assistant performs supportive tasks as directed by a licensed audiologist who is not directly involved in diagnosis and treatment. Assistants can help the audiologist perform tests and prepare patients for them, as well as maintain equipment, keep records, and repair hearing aids. Although becoming an audiologist usually requires a doctoral degree, it is possible to obtain an assistant position with at least a high school diploma and field competency training.

Licensed audiologists diagnose and treat people suffering from hearing loss, balance problems and other ear-related conditions. They use audiometers and computers to examine patients and analyze results. Before the test, an audiologist assistant can check the equipment and ensure that everything is in place and in working order for the doctor.

The audiologist’s assistant can create impressions of the ear mold to install hearing aids and perform repairs on the units that are taken in for service. An assistant in a larger practice might specialize in this activity. Much of the work will be answering patient questions over the phone and in the office. Assistants also help patients learn how to use their hearing aids. Duties can be expanded to include administrative tasks that provide support to the audiologist.

During the course of employment, the assistant audiologist may perform certain low-level testing procedures under the direct supervision of the audiologist, either directly or in a support role. Neonatal screening can usually be performed by a trained and competent assistant audiologist, freeing the physician for more critical care and treatment of other patients. Preliminary routine tests may determine the need for a more thorough examination by the physician, which a well-trained assistant is capable of performing. Assistants should not be expected to perform tasks for which the audiologist has not directly authorized and observed that they are competent.

College or university courses may be sought after in audiology for those interested in an audiologist assistant career. Military personnel have the option of undergoing a rigorous training regimen that can be applied in civilian life. In some US states, licensing requirements include practical and written exams before an audiologist assistant can perform certain tasks or tests. Competency-based training can also be provided through a program developed by the audiologist.

In the US, the percentage of audiologist assistant jobs in Veterans Administration (VA) hospitals increased by 619% between 1996 and 2004. Government positions typically provide on-the-job training, but only for contractors. There are job openings in private practice and a good assistant can be employed in the same office for several years. Non-military hospitals, outpatient care centers and clinics may also look for personnel who are well trained in this field of healthcare.
