What’s an AVI Compressor?

An AVI compressor reduces the size or quality of AVI files and can convert other formats to AVI. It can work on audio, video, or both. Compression may be permanent, but some compressors can boost quality. Artifacts may appear in compressed videos. Adding quality is rare.

An audio video interleaving (AVI) compressor is a program that is responsible for reducing AVI files or converting other files to AVI. For an AVI compressor to work, it has to reduce the quality or file size, so less memory is required. This program can usually change other file formats to AVI files, but some may not have this feature. The AVI format is used for both audio and video files, so the compressor can work on the audio, video, or both to reduce memory. Some AVI compressors are later capable of boosting the quality of an AVI to its original level, but this feature is rare and the compression may be permanent.

To reduce the amount of storage an AVI file needs, an AVI compressor needs to reduce the quality, size, or both. A reduction in size is often less detrimental to quality and simply shrinks the movie window when the AVI is played. If the user tries to increase the size of a minimized window, they will usually see quality issues. Degrading quality can reduce the frame rate, so some segments may skip or scroll poorly, and there are often artifacts in the video. Video artifacts usually appear as slightly discolored squares or rectangles and can be distracting.

Most AVI compression programs are also capable of converting other video and audio files to AVI format. Some can work with any media file format, while others have a limited range of formats they can convert. The compressor normally needs a higher quality file format to properly compress it into an AVI, but not always. This feature is not included in all AVI compressors.

Unlike some file formats that are used solely for video, audio, or a combination of the two, AVI files can be used for all three. Most AVI files are video files with audio. Regardless, most AVI compressor programs are capable of working with both audio and video streams to ensure that the AVI file is compressed properly.

An uncommon feature for an AVI compressor is the ability to add memory to the AVI or increase its quality. This feature is rare because adding quality is usually more difficult than taking it away. When a compressor is used, compression is usually permanent. To compensate for this, many users make a copy of an AVI before compressing it; otherwise, it may not be possible to recover the high-quality version before compression.
