The eggshell cutter is a device similar to scissors that gently peels off the top of a boiled egg. It is made of stainless steel and can be easily cleaned and maintained. It can be found in specialty stores and is a fun way to serve eggs.

As a practical means of preparing a soft or hard-boiled egg for serving, the shell cutter makes the job quick and easy. Sometimes referred to as an eggshell scissors or egg snipper, this device is actually very similar to a pair of scissors. With two handles and blades that form into a circle and feature a row of teeth, it is able to gently peel off the top of the egg shell without shattering the entire egg. Cutters are normally made of stainless steel and can come with hard plastic coated handles, not unlike sewing shears.

To use the egg cutters, a person would hold the egg in one hand, sliding the fingers of the other hand through the holes in the handles. He or she should gently place the cutter blades along the top of the egg, but low enough on the shell to cause an opening large enough to admit a spoon. The egg topper handles are then gently squeezed until the prongs penetrate the shell. The cutter is then gently pulled upwards and the top of the eggshell will also be lifted, leaving an opening which will allow the egg to be consumed by dipping a spoon into the remaining body of the shell.

The cleaning and maintenance of the eggshell cutter is relatively simple. Thanks to the stainless steel construction, the utensil can be easily washed in soapy water or placed in the dishwasher. It is important to ensure that the device dries thoroughly. This will reduce the potential for dulling and rusting of the blades and handles. Sharpening the teeth on the blades can be done with any standard knife sharpener.

There are several excellent versions of the eggshell cutter on the market today, varying only in the size and color of the handles. While a very simple kitchen utensil, this device is sometimes hard to find in discount retail stores. More often, it can be located in a boutique kitchen and specialty stores devoted to kitchen appliances and utensils, such as a restaurant supply store. Despite the fact that it may take some effort to find one, the utensil isn’t really very expensive and definitely can be a way to put some fun back into eating a cooked egg.
