An electrical room houses a building’s electrical equipment and is usually located in an industrial or residential building. The size of the room depends on the size of the building and it must meet safety codes. The room contains circuit breaker or fuse boxes controlled by switches and should be well-lit. Breaker boxes have different colored wires, switches, cables, and power failure switches for different sections of the building. The layout of each breaker box should not be changed without proper knowledge.

An electrical room is a room in a building designated to contain the building’s electrical equipment. This electrical power distribution center is normally located in an industrial building, but can also be found in residential areas. People who have accidentally exited an elevator into the basement of a hospital or business may have stumbled upon an electrical room.

Typically, power rooms are sized in proportion to their buildings; thus, a larger building can accommodate one large room, while smaller buildings contain smaller electrical rooms. Buildings that are extremely large and require huge amounts of energy may also contain a main electrical room that branches off into smaller rooms. In many cases, the room is marked with a sign to assist the service people in maintaining the building. These signs are also important to display to prevent people who are not part of the room from intruding and harming each other; in many buildings the door will always be locked.

The design of an electrical room is typically very straightforward and clean, and must meet local building and electrical safety codes during and after construction. Most electrical rooms have wide, open corridors or walkways, with the actual electrical equipment securely fastened to the walls. The area should ideally be well lit to allow the best access to the electrical system controls. Fire resistant mechanisms are often placed in the rooms also to ensure maximum safety.

Energy from the local power plant typically flows into the electrical room via utility cables and into circuit breaker or fuse boxes, which can also vary in size. These are normally controlled by switches which can be switched on or off according to the needs of the building. Depending on the number of rooms and the size of a building, the electrical room may contain one or more switch boxes. These are normally kept clear of debris to allow service workers or business owners easy access to switches in case of an emergency.

Inside each breaker box are a multitude of different colored wires, individual switches, cables, and power failure switches for different sections of the building. The layout of each breaker box is likely to vary and should not be changed or tampered with without proper knowledge. Most breaker boxes show a diagram of how they should be arranged and used within the panel, and this can be useful when the contents of the breaker box are to be used.
